Fund manager commentary: December 2023
As the year ended, the equity markets we monitor recorded a positive performance, with the exception of the Japanese Nikkei Index, which only just managed to hold its ground. The Dow Jones rose by 4.84%. The DAX and EuroStoxx 50 advanced by over 3% and the SMI gained 2.6%. Over the year as a whole, the SMI, with a return of just 3.8%, clearly lagged behind the other stock markets, which gained between 13.7% and 28.2%.
The yield on the 10-year Swiss Confederation bond declined from 0.81% to 0.65% and the yield on the 10-year Bund from 2.45% to 2.02%. The US 10-year Treasury yield also came under pressure, closing at 3.86%.
The euro traded slightly lower against the Swiss franc, closing at 0.931. The US dollar likewise weakened, closing the month under review 0.842. Year-on-year, the euro lost around 5% and the US currency 9.3% against the Swiss franc.
While the price of gold rose by 1.37%, the price per barrel of oil fell by 3.54%.
Partial sales were made in AMS, Aryzta and Doc Morris due to quota overruns.
The monthly performance of our fund in CHF amounted to plus 3.42% (2023 minus 0.75%). The performance of the tranche traded in euros was plus 5.56% (2023: 5.42%).
